Arrows Drop Opener

It wasn't the way the Six Nations Arrows wanted to kick off the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior A season, but there is a lot coach Marshall Abrams and his team can take from Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Peterborough Jr Lakers at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.
“I think they were a step ahead of us tonight,” Abrams said. “I thought we were prepared but I guess we weren't as prepared as we thought. This is a really good Peterborough team, probably one of the best Peterborough teams I've seen in a long time.”
And because of that, Abrams thought it was a great first test for his young Arrows, who were missing six of their players.
Josh Currier and Dan Michel gave the Lakers an early start, scoring two goals in the first three minutes of the game.
But Brendan Bomberry got the Arrows on the board, when he cut towards the net, received the pass and shot as he dove towards goalie Connor Danko.
The Arrows tied things up late in the first period, when Vaughn Harris netted his first goal of the season.
After Cam Milligan gave the Lakers a 3-2 lead early in the second period, Josh Johnson struck back with a hard shot that easily beat Danko to tie things up.
And then Arrows goalie Warren Hill went to work.
The Arrows netminder was one of the busiest players on the floor, bailing his teammates out numerous times, making several huge saves.
“The goaltending tonight was fantastic at both ends,” Abrams said. “Warren was great for us tonight. He was our best player. For us to be successful, we need him to be like that.”
Feeding off Hill's play, Brandon Monture gave the Arrows its first lead of the game late in the second period. Less than a minute later, Johnson netted his second goal of the game to give the Arrows a two-goal lead.
But the Jr Lakers fought back with less than a minute to go, when Zach Herreweyers beat Hill. Currier then tied things up 20 seconds into the third period and then Herreweyers scored again to give the Lakers the lead with seven and a half minutes left. A minute and a half later Jeff Swift struck, giving the Lakers a two-goal lead they wouldn't give up.
“They're a lot more experienced and in my mind one of the teams to beat this year,” Abrams said. “We'll get there. By the end of the season we'll be there. I think we have the talent to be at that level. It just won't happen over night. We have a really talented group.”
Abrams said with a game under its belt, they have plenty of tape to go over to make their adjustments.
LAX NOTES: It was a Brantford Golden Eagles reunion Sunday, when Jeff Swift, wearing No. 16 for the Jr Lakers took on teammate and Arrows player Brandon Monture. Shots on goal were 40-32 in favour of the Arrows. Next up for the Arrows are the Mississauga Tomahawks, who come to the ILA Thursday for an 8 p.m. game.
